Give Health A Chance
Maybe you think you don’t have any food sensitivities. I didn’t. I used to think all those people talking about gluten and wheat were out of their minds. I mean, I was eating sub sandwiches, pizza, and pasta all the time, I it didn’t seem to affect me! I thought all these people were just a little too susceptible to fringe ideas and looking for something on which they could blame their poor health. I didn’t have any problems like they had, or at least that’s what I thought.
Then I stumbled upon Dr. Maffetone’s two week test. I suppose that I tricked myself into trying a wheat free and grain free diet. If I had known that’s what it was, I probably would not have tried it. Lol. I was interested in the two week test because I was interested in improving my running performance and had heard great things about The Maffetone Method. Somehow, in my mind, this was different than all those people who were Earth-burger hippies complaining about gluten, GMO crops, and how aliens built the pyramids.
I have to say…. The list of things that got better when I cut out refined carbohydrates, including wheat, grains, and added sugar, was nothing less than shocking to me at the time. My allergies went from being so bad that I required daily allergy meds, to never needing any allergy meds. My itchy dry skin improved, and I stopped constantly getting allergic reactions on my skin that required steroids to calm down. I used to get poison ivy at least once every summer, and that went away too. I also stopped feeling so sore after exercise. And if that weren’t enough, I lost 25 lbs in 6 weeks.
The crazy part is, I never thought I had any issues with wheat or grains or sugar. I was living in this chronic inflamed allergic condition that I had come to accept as “normal.” I had no idea that things could be better, let along that I could feel amazing, lose weight effortlessly, and get rid of my chronic allergies. I really thought my overall health was great, and I made no connection between my general health and the fact that I had these annoying aches, pains, and allergic reactions. I just thought I was developing allergies as I aged. I also chalked up the pain after exercise to “getting older.”
So if you are in a similar position as I was, thinking that all these changes in your life are “just getting older”, and that there is nothing you can do about it, consider changing your diet and switching to a Paleo style diet that excluded processed foods like wheat, grains, and added sugar, and includes lots of fresh organic produce and pasture raised meats. Still skeptical? Give your health a chance and try it for a solid two weeks like I did; you may never want to go back. That’s exactly what happened to me.
